AROUND THE CLOCK 2023
Fire Station #3, Sugar Land, TX
The sculpture's central figure with a bold, red number three on a gold ground represents Fire Station 3 at the heart of the community signified by twelve stylized houses arrayed out from the center. The arrangement resembles a clock face and the title, Around the Clock, suggests that the Fire Department is on-call and at the ready 24 hours a day.
The twelve houses are supported on a series of silver ladders and gold fire poles setting up a circular rhythm – up the ladder, down the pole, up the ladder, down the pole, as one's eye travels around the sculpture. Within that pattern, a careful observer may perceive the shape of a Maltese Cross; four lobes bordered by the gold poles with a ladder at the center of each. The Maltese Cross is an emblem, an insignia, recognized as the fire service's universal symbol of protection.
The color scheme is based on that of the Sugar Land Fire Department: red, white, black and gold with a subtle additional color palette featured in the doors of the houses: the team colors of the city's Triple-A baseball team; the Space Cowboys.
